The car waits on Mustikkamaa, not at the gate

Cars cannot reach the zoo entrance. The road ends on Mustikkamaa, the neighbouring island, and the last few hundred metres run on foot over the Korkeasaarensilta bridge. Departures work the same way in reverse: we wait on the Mustikkamaa side at the same spot used for drop-offs, and you walk out to the car rather than looking for it at the ticket office. Agree the time and the place with your driver before you go in, and send a message if the day ends sooner than planned — the car comes earlier.

Fitting a flight around a last day at the zoo

From Mustikkamaa the airport is about 21 km and around 32 minutes in normal traffic. With the two hours the airport asks for before an international departure, a flight at 08:00 means leaving the island shortly before 05:30 and a midday flight around 09:30. The useful trick on a departure day is to keep the suitcases in the car: we collect you and the luggage from your hotel in the morning, wait on Mustikkamaa while you spend the day on the island, and drive from the bridge straight to the departures level of Terminal 2 — no lockers, no doubling back into the centre. The way out runs Itäväylä and Ring I before turning north, which is slower in the afternoon peak than in the morning; for an evening flight we build that in.

Wind, winter and everything you carried

The island is open to the sea, and the bridge is the coldest stretch of a winter visit — plan the walk back to the car for the moment the children have had enough rather than a quarter of an hour after it. Pushchairs, packs and coats go into the boot whole; nothing needs folding onto a tram. In summer some visitors finish the day differently and take the waterbus across to the Market Square instead, in which case we simply pick you up in the centre and the flight timing shifts by the crossing.

We watch the morning traffic and the weather, and if your flight moves, the pickup moves with it.
