Leaving Porvoo for your flight

Porvoo to Helsinki Airport is about 50 km and roughly 45 to 50 minutes, almost all of it on the E18 / Highway 7 motorway running west along the coast before the airport turn-off. Geography works in your favour in this direction: Porvoo lies east of Helsinki and the airport north-east of it, so a car never doubles back through the capital the way the coach route forces you to. The weekday peak on the E18 is the flow into Helsinki, not out towards the airport, so an early departure normally holds to the estimate. There is no regular passenger train from Porvoo — the old line carries only occasional heritage services — which is why the departure leg here is almost always a car: the alternative is a bus into Helsinki and a second connection out again with your luggage.

Cars are kept out of much of Old Porvoo, and its lanes are cobbled, narrow and steep in places, which is the worst possible surface for a wheeled suitcase. Addresses out in the Pellinge archipelago need more margin again, and in winter they need it most: the coast roads are snow-covered, February daylight arrives long after your car does, and the Porvoo Lights weekends fill the town. None of that touches the fare agreed at booking — it only changes the hour we set out.
