The arithmetic of a 386 km departure

Kuopio to Helsinki Airport is about 386 km and roughly four and a half hours: Highway 5 (E63) south through Varkaus and Mikkeli, then the E75 Lahti motorway for the final stretch to Terminal 2. Add the two hours the airport asks for before an international departure and a flight at 08:00 works out at a pickup around 01:30 — a genuine overnight drive, and we would rather say so than quietly book it. Most passengers on this route do one of two things instead: choose a flight from midday onwards, which puts the pickup at a civilised 05:30 for a 12:00 departure, or set off the evening before. Where you are actually leaving from

On a route this long the pickup address matters more than on any city run. A hotel by the market square or the passenger harbour is the four-and-a-half-hour case, and so is the Savilahti campus and hospital district. From Tahko, add about an hour before all of it — the resort lies some 60 km northeast of the city, and a slope-side apartment is found far faster from an exact address than from a resort name. The Rauhalahti shore south of the centre and a cottage on Kallavesi each shift the clock a little as well. Give us the door and we build the schedule backwards from your flight.

Winter nights, ski bags and four hours to use

From November to April this is a proper Finnish winter drive: short daylight, snow showers, icy stretches between Mikkeli and Varkaus. The car runs on winter tyres with a driver who knows the road in that state, and the price agreed at booking does not change because the road slowed down. It is also time you can use — four and a half hours in a quiet car is a working half-day or a long sleep, whichever the trip has left you needing. Ski and boot bags off the Tahko slopes travel with you rather than in a second vehicle, and we stop for coffee around Mikkeli, roughly halfway, unless you would rather run straight through.
