Leaving Unioninkatu for the airport

Hotel Haven sits at Unioninkatu 17, a few steps from the Market Square, about 20 km from the terminal and around 29 minutes away in normal traffic. With the two hours the airport asks for international departures, an 08:00 flight means a car at the door at roughly 05:30, and a six o'clock evening flight means leaving at about half past three — plus a quarter of an hour for the afternoon peak, when the centre and the northbound roads are busiest. Early mornings are the opposite: the harbourfront is deserted and the first stretch through the centre takes minutes.

Where the car waits by the harbour

The pickup is the hotel entrance on Unioninkatu itself. The blocks around it are trams, market traffic and one-way streets, and the stalls on the Market Square begin setting up early, so a driver who knows where he may stand, and for how long, is worth more here than almost anywhere else in the city. He loads at the door — which, at a five-star boutique hotel with no forecourt of its own, is the whole point of booking the car in advance.

The last morning by the water

Departure day at Haven has a well-worn shape: breakfast under the high windows of the Sundman House next door, a walk along the quay to the Old Market Hall, then the car. Two hours covers all of it comfortably before a midday flight.
