It is the afternoon and early-evening departures that want padding: between roughly four and six the centre and the roads north are at their slowest, so we build in an extra fifteen minutes rather than bet on a clear road.

Where the car can actually stop

This is the busiest pedestrian quarter in the city, with one-way streets, tram lines a block away and deliveries all morning. The driver pulls in on Kluuvikatu at the hotel entrance — the same door where the ground-floor bar and reception are — loads there and goes, so nobody walks cases out to a rank on Aleksanterinkatu. In summer the Esplanade and the streets around it host events that can close a lane or two; your driver checks the day's picture before he sets out, which is the main reason a local car beats an app on this particular street.

Using the last morning

If the flight is late enough, the address earns its keep on the way out as well as on the way in.
