How to Get from Helsinki Airport to City Center: All Your Options

Helsinki Airport is about twenty kilometres from the city centre, and there are five realistic ways to cover them. After a long flight, with luggage in hand, most travellers face the same question — which one is right for me? Here is a clear comparison.

Helsinki Airport (HEL) is well connected: train, bus, taxi, ride-hailing apps and pre-booked private transfers all run from the terminal. Each has its strengths, and the right choice depends on what matters to you — price, speed, comfort or certainty. Here is every option, with real 2026 numbers.

All options at a glance

OptionTime to centreTypical cost (2026)Best for
Train (I / P lines)~30 min to Central Station€4.80 (HSL ABC single)Solo travellers, light luggage
Bus (HSL)40–60 min€4.80 (same ticket)Districts the train misses

Ride-hailing apps25–40 min + pickupvaries with demandApp-first travellers
Pre-booked private transfer25–40 minfrom €107 per carFamilies, business, late arrivals

Prices as of summer 2026. Now the details — including the small print each option hides.

Train — fast, cheap, reliable

The I and P commuter trains run from the station directly under the terminal to Helsinki Central Station in about 30 minutes, departing roughly every ten minutes for most of the day. A single HSL ticket covering the airport–centre journey (zones ABC) costs €4.80 — buy it in the HSL app or from a machine, not on board.

For a solo traveller with a cabin bag, this is often the simplest choice, and we say that as a transfer company.

Worth knowing: the platform is a few minutes' walk and two escalators below arrivals; at rush hour the carriages fill with commuters, and with two large suitcases or a pram the journey is less effortless than it looks on paper. Trains also do not run all night — very late arrivals need a plan B.

Bus — for the places the train misses

HSL regional buses connect the airport with neighbourhoods and suburbs the rail line skips, on the same €4.80 ABC ticket. They are slower than the train and involve more walking at both ends, but if your destination happens to sit on a direct line, they are unbeatable value. Check your exact connection in the HSL journey planner before relying on one. If you were looking for a shared shuttle van, Helsinki does not have one — see what exists instead of an airport shuttle.

Taxi from the rank — convenient, with caveats

Taxis wait directly outside arrivals, and at Helsinki Airport the ranks are organised into lanes operated by Finavia's partner companies. You take the first car in the lane: no booking, and nobody waiting for you inside the hall.

The caveats are the ordinary ones: after a wave of arrivals the lanes empty and the queue grows, the car is whatever is next in line, and a child seat is rarely on board. The rules protect you as a passenger: the total price must be told to you before the ride, and anything over €100 must be expressly agreed in advance. Ride-hailing apps — familiar, demand-priced

Uber, Bolt and other apps work in Helsinki exactly as at home: book in the app, follow the pickup signs, meet the car. Pricing moves with demand — cheap on a quiet Tuesday, notably less so when three flights land at once in the rain. Pickup can take a few minutes depending on where the driver is and which door you are standing at.

If you use these apps daily and travel light, they are a perfectly reasonable option.

Pre-booked private transfer — when you want everything sorted

Some travellers want zero friction: no queues, no apps at the kerb, no wondering whether the car will be there. A pre-booked private transfer settles all of it before your plane lands:

  • Your driver meets you inside the arrivals hall with your name on a board and walks you to the car.
  • Your flight is tracked — if you are delayed, the pickup shifts automatically; no stress on your side.
  • The price is fixed when you book, from €107 per car — not per person, and not a cent more on the day.
  • The car is yours alone — a Mercedes-Benz E-Class or similar, a spacious Mercedes minivan for up to eight, a Sprinter minibus for fifteen, or the flagship S-Class (see the fleet).

It is not the cheapest line in the table. For families with luggage, business travellers on a schedule and anyone landing late at night, it is usually the one that pays for itself in saved nerves. Here is what a pre-booked transfer includes, piece by piece.

Which option is right for you?

  • Travelling solo, light bag, daytime → the train.
  • Heading somewhere off the rail line → check the bus connection.
  • Want an ordinary taxi, but with the price fixed in advance → our economy class, from €72 per car, for rides to and from Helsinki Airport and around the Helsinki area, longer trips included.
  • Live in your ride-hailing app → it works here too.
  • Family, group, late flight, or you simply want it handled → pre-book a private transfer.

There is no wrong answer — only what fits your journey. And whichever you choose, our arrival instructions explain the terminal step by step, from the gate to the kerb.

This page is about the city centre. If your address is a hotel further out, a ferry terminal, Espoo or another city altogether, every route we drive is listed with its distance, drive time and fixed price.

Start your Helsinki trip the right way

Helsinki has a reputation for calm and efficiency, and your ride from the airport can set exactly that tone. If you prefer a smooth, predictable arrival with everything arranged before you land — fixed price, meet & greet, a driver who waits even when the plane does not cooperate — booking takes about a minute.
